Ultrasound

What is it?

During an ultrasound high frequency sounds waves are directed at soft tissue areas of the body allowing us to accurately image them. Areas we may ultrasound are the heart, the eyes, fetal exams, the abdominal organs, like the bladder, the prostate, the liver, the kidneys, the spleen and others.

Does it hurt?

No, ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure commonly used for a variety of concerns. There are no incisions and not sutures. Keep in mind that we often need to shave some fur on your pet. There is no discomfort to an ultrasound and your pet will be resting comfortably as the exam is performed.

How long does it take?

Different ultrasound exams take different lengths of time. Also, since your pet is almost always awake for the procedure, we may need to stop and start several times to give them a break, depending on how wiggly they are!

Will my pet need to stay overnight?

Generally, you pet will not need to be in hospital more than a few hours for the ultrasound, and most only take a few minutes! However, the results of the ultrasound may show that they should remain in hospital for treatment.

When do I get results of this procedure?

Most often you get the ultrasound results the very same day. In some instances, the doctor may recommend sending a copy of the ultrasound to a specialist for referral. In those cases it may be 2-5 days for the final results.
