Computer Tomography
What is it?
The CT Scanner is a diagnostic imaging instrument, which
allows us to investigate all areas of your pet's body from a
very unique and resourceful perspective using special x-ray technology.
Multiple pictures are taken in a spiral sequence allowing us
to accurately “map” parts
of their body, to a minimum of 1 millimetre intervals that can't
be viewed any other way. This information is invaluable to the
doctors.
How is my pet scanned?
In order to perform this test on your pet, they will need to be
under a general anesthesia. Sometimes a contrast media (special
dye) is used as well, to create contrast on the images captured,
allowing us to see abnormalities the would otherwise be difficult
to visualize. The length of the scan can vary from 30 minutes to
an one and half hours depending on what area of the body is being
scanned.
What parts of the body are scanned?
Any part of the body can be scanned. We may scan
the sinuses in the head for chronic upper respiratory problems
. In cases of seizuring or behaviour abnormalities the
brain may be scanned to check for , tumors or
other structural changes. (ie strokes because
of blockages, bleeds or trauma) A thoracic (chest) scan might be
recommended in case of coughing or wheezing in
your pets. The abdomen can be scanned for all sorts of gastro
intestinal problems, urinary problems, or growths .
As well, we can do full spinal scans and bone/joint
scans in cases of lameness and/or pain.
Does it hurt my pet?
No. There is nothing invasive about this procedure. There are
no incisions. There are no sutures. A CT scan, simply speaking,
is taking pictures (images) of your pet.
How long does my pet have to be in hospital?
This really varies from case to case. Often a CT scan can be done
as a day procedure, however in some cases your pet may need to
be hospitalized overnight.
How long until we get results?
As soon as your pets scan is completed the images are sent off
through the internet, to a board certified radiology specialist
to review and interpret the CT images. We generally have results
with in 24-48 hours. Having results this quickly allows us to better
manage your pets health and to be able to know the appropriate
route of treatment.
